French govt. criticized by Algeria over immigration

 26 Feb 2025

The French government, which had lowered the number of visas able to be granted to Algerian officials, was criticized by the Algerian Foreign Affairs Ministry for following "orders from the far-right".

The former French colony has had worsening diplomatic relations with France ever since its independence. The latest incident, where a schizophrenic Algerian national attacked multiple people with a knife, provoked the French government to clamp down on Algerian visas. However, Algerians make up 12.2 percent of immigrants living in France.

The Algerian government issued a statement on the visa issue, stating that they were "in no way informed", and that the measures were "part of the long list of provocations, intimidations, and threats directed against Algeria".

France has held a meeting tackling immigration issues, and is working to resolve the dispute. However, with ministers discussing restricting visas issued to not just officials, but all Algerian citizens, and France claiming that Algeria refused the deportation of the stabbing suspect over 10 times, there seems to be no end in sight.
